Viva La Ciclovia Jakarta

There's no way you could ever call Jakarta a beautiful city. However, each Sunday morning between 6 am and 11 am the city closes off a significant part of the main thoroughfares for a "car-free day" so that people can come out and have a relaxing stroll or bike ride through town, and that, is a very beautiful thing. You can see its effect on the smiles of girls riding their bikes in this photograph. Also to be mentioned, is the city's marked though temporary improvement to the otherwise terrible air quality.

 

 

 

 

This used to be a twice-monthly affair, but as of this year it was increased to a weekly event, and as a tourist, I think it's a very worthwhile cultural moment to experience should one happen to be in Jakarta on any given Sunday.
