this area is a floodplain and as a result it was mostly mud, crackling, covered thickly with the dessicated remains of dead fish from the annual die-offs - mostly tilapia and corvina. It is an eerie and beautiful place. These nests are likely built by one of the large water birds that inhabit the Salton Sea - probably egrets, herons or possibly brown pelicans
