Royal Tour 1963
The Queen and Prince Philip visit Kununurra and the Ord River Diversion Dam on March 17th 1963 - Before the July Official Opening of Stage 1 of the Ord River Project by Prime Minister Menzies.

To commemorate 50 years since the Royal Tour further images were added in February 2013.

Visit to see a YouTube video of the Royal Tour made from three 8mm films and stills from the KHS archive.

Digitised and documented by KHS Volunteers.

A highlight of the Civil Aviation Historical Society (WA) Collection at KHS are several photographs that were not captioned, which, research has found, to be of a control tower specifically set up for the 1963 Royal Tour to Kununurra, as well as images of the Fire Tenders that were flown up for the event in RAAF transport aircraft.

The Civil Aviation Historical Society (CAHS) WA branch was disbanded around 2007 and these archival documents, maps and photographic collections were de-accessioned from CAHS and were posted to the Kununurra Historical Society around that time. The archive contains history documents, maps and plans of Airports and photographic collections taken by Department of Civil Aviation (CASA) staff. This archive is of local, State and National significance, about the history of Civil Aviation and Flight Service units at Wyndham and Kununurra from 1941.
