Castle View

    Newer Older

I wish I had found out the story of this unusual castle on our way to Rifugio Prato Piazza. I found the juxtaposition of old and new building styles rather striking, and would happily spend time enjoying the view from either. OK you Dolomite place experts, here is yet another chance to play Name that Mountain. No prizes, because I will not know if you are right. :)

Well, I feel rather humbled by all the comments and views-- and more than embarrassed by a lack of care in identifying the "castle" as Forte Prata Piazza and the house nearby as Rifugio Vallandro. I stand corrected!

Thanks Serena (see above comment) - I really appreciate the more detailed description you provide:

This is the Fort Meadow Square, an Austro-Hungarian fortress built in the late nineteenth century. During the First World War was presided over by enemy troops who were fighting on the border, compared with those stationed in front of Italian, Monte Cristallo. All this area was the scene of long and exhausting battle in the trenches .... mountains in the background are the Cadini Misurina.
