• I am still amazed that this was even possible in one day for a single photo. And on Sept 20, 2011 it hit 177,000 in one day.

4th Most Views on One Photo in One Day- 70,847 - Merging Oceans

Newer Older

(Update: The highest number of views in one day is now over 177,000 in the link below)

It is not like this is my most impressive shot, but the power of the internet and viral posting was clearly evident with this image on January 20, 2011. After a week of 300-400 views per day from a blog on this image in Tumblr.com, someone posted it in Reddit.com and the views exploded. At one point there were nearly 100 views per minute on the image! The 24 hour period Flickr tracked for this incredible surge ended with nearly 71,000 views on this image that day. Before this image went crazy I had about 55,000 views on my entire site of nearly 800 images after 18 months of membership. That averages just over 100 views per day for my entire collection and my single largest number of views on a single image in a single day was never more than about 40 when I was working hard to get a photo into a number of different groups. This image was viewed about 1,800 times more.

I doubt I will ever do anything on Flickr directly to get this many views in a single day, so unless I get another image to go viral in another major blogging site this will be my record photo.

I think I am most amazed that I didn't need to put any of the typical "sexual" tags that get photos huge views.

On September 20, 2011, Merging Oceans went viral again and this time hit over 177,000 views in one day. Here are the stats from that day: www.flickr.com/photos/kentsmith9/6171392382/

Moto CC, once I figure it out I will be sure to pass it along to all my friends. In the mean time I am as amazed as everyone else. StumbleUpon is seeing about 15-20K views per day currently, but only about 0.1% (yes 1/1000) of them click through to my Flickr page. I can see the StumbleUpon traffic since I have an account there (now) and can see the total views on that page.

That is so awesome, well done! That is the fun of flickr, you upload a photo you love and it gets 10 views or you upload a photo that isn't your fav and it gets heaps - this has happened to me too, but not 70 000 views in one day - for me a successful photo might fluke 100 views in one day!

The group Views 5000 is not a minimum-group. Read rules. (Admin)

pks_56_pks, by your comment I assume you mean there is a maximum number of views to the group where you should move up? I have removed my image from the 5000 group and added it to the 8000 group.

    The rules:
    About Views 5000
Must have 5000 views when added to the pool, but not more than 6000, anything goes.
    About Views 8000
Must have 8000 views when added to the pool, but not more than 9000, anything goes.
    etc. (Admin)

    pks_56_pks, 2 questions:

    1. Where do you see that? When I go to www.flickr.com/groups/8000/rules/ it tells me the group admin has not set up any rules.

    2. Normally a group will have such a top limit when they also have a group above that limit to enable pushing a photo from one group into another. If there is a limit to the 8000 view group of 9000, then there should be a 9000-10000 views group of this same series. I don't see one linked from any of the other views groups.

Based on the groups you have defined I would say it make more sense that the 8000+ Views group is 8000-10000 and after exceeding that level photographers can move their photo up to the 10000 views group.

I learned something new today about the wonderful world we live. I am not talking about going viral either, however, that's pretty cool too!
