Leaving on That Late, Late Train

Today, the great Solomon Burke became the late, great Solomon Burke. He died of natural causes just after arriving at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam having been due to play a gig at Pardiso on Tuesday.

I took this shot of him at WOMAD last year, the only time that I ever saw him perform...and I'm glad I had the chance to to so. He was the headline act on the Friday night...had the crowd in the palm of his hand...and put on a terrific show.

My thanks are due to Dickie Chappell who arranged my photo pass.

You can hear the man himself here:

You can see a previously posted shot of him here: The King of Rock 'n' Soul

Here's a quote from an interview Solomon gave in 2008:

"Soul," says Burke, "is the deep feeling that is expressed from the heart and the mind: from a musician, an artist, a dancer, a photographer or from a writer. When you open your heart, and pour out your spirit, and you feel something that makes a difference in your life: that," Solomon Burke declares, "is the meaning of soul."
