Roxy Theatre, Manhattan, NYC

Located at 153 W. 50th Street, Manhattan, New York, the Roxy Theatre opened on 12th March 1927 with Gloria Swanson in "The Love of Sunya" . The theatre was billed as the'Cathedral of the Motion Picture' and had a seating capacity of 5,920 located in orchestra, mezanine and balcony. The architect was Walter W. Ahlschlager of Chicago and had interior decorations by Harold W. Rambush.

It was equipped with a triple console Kimbell 3Manual theatre organ and there was another organ in the rotunda lobby. The theatre had a fully equipped stage which was in use for most of its life acomodation a show to accompany the main feature film.

The Roxy closed in 1960 with Dirk Bogarde in "The Wind Cannot Read". The auditorium was demolished and an office block built but the space where the outer foyer is located is now in use as a TGI Friday's restaurant. Sadly, there are not visible features to be seen from it's theatre days.

The above photograph is scanned from 'Das Lichtspieltheater' by W. Gabler (published in 1950). It is a rare view from the stage showing the orchestra pit, orchestra seating, mezanine seating and balcony seating. Note the position of the projection booth in the front of the balcony.
