ABC, Hackney, London

    Newer Older

Photographed in Summer 1994, the former Regal Cinema/ABC/Mayfair had been in use as a snooker club, but had closed at the time of this photo.

This magnificent 1,848 seat cinema was designed in an Art Deco style by architect William R. Glen and opened in 1936. It closed as a cinema in 1981. Located on the corner of Mare Street and Well Street, Hackney in the east of London the building was demolished in July 1998.

I remember it well. Saw ZULU here and at the end everyone stood up at the playing of the national anthem. No I am not that old this was when the film came out 1970's ish?

Also at that time wehn all the Bruce Lee films came out I can remember the glass getting smashed at the bus stop as low lifes practised the karate kicks.

Think the pointy roof building further along was a policece lodging house?

I used to live on the kingshold estate near the abc in the 1960,s and most of us used to go to the saturday morning pictures. I can remember all going to see the italian job and where eagles dare.
It was a big day out for us as we never had any money ,we were all school kids in those days... but great memories from those days !

      Hi
I lived in flats in King Edwards Rd. from 1947-56, and this was our nearest Cinema. I have many memories of queueing up outside, and of the buskers entertaining the waiting people. I think the cheapest seats were about 1/-.

What was handy about living in Hackney in the 40's & 50's as I did, was that on Mare St. I could walk (& of course we all did, no one had cars) to 3 cinemas on Mare St. Besides the Regal there was the Empress about 5 minutes away away from the regal towards the Hackney Empire, and across from the Hackney Empire but further down, was the Pavilion ????.
I went to the Cinema at least once a week, sometimes twice. This was before the introduction of TV and not long after.
