Sahara Sand

The dunes of the Sahara desert. Having departed from the outskirts of the village of Merzouga at the Erg Chebbi, this was taken from the top of a camel about a mile into the dunes (as the crow flies); overnight camp was three miles in (very close to the Algerian border). It is an engulfing and beautiful sight. I once spent a week in the Imperial Dunes in California [Glamis or the Algodones Dunes] - but this is even more majestic.

I was looking forward to shots of the night stars and stunning sunrises. But unfortunately as our trek began we encountered a rare cloud cover over the dunes that would last the duration of our stay in the Sahara. Thankfully *just* before the clouds rolled in completely, the setting sun peeked out through the clouds and cast a warm glow on the dunes.
