A Winter Day

It was unusually cold in Whitehorse for most of January, the temperatures dropping into the high minus 30's and the Yukon River valley, shrouded in gloomy ice-fog, made it impossible to test my new Nikon 10-24 mm lens. About 10 days ago, it warmed up to about minus 30, the ice-fog lifted, and I was able to get a few shots of the river, frozen fingers notwithstanding. Fortunately, it continued to warm up to about zero, and it's been absolutely tropical in these parts lately.

This is a view of the river looking south from downtown Whitehorse near the riverboat. I'm very happy with the lens so far, as it's small, light, produces decent colour and is very sharp, perfect for landscapes. Winter landscapes are not really my thing-- too much snow, too cold and the light and colour is usually flat and boring unless the sky is clear and you are lucky enough to find a decent composition. This one is pretty much straight out of the camera with a few basic adjustments in CS5.
