It's Play Time!
These are Common Ravens engaged in aerial acrobatics during courtship season last February. One is showing off his prize, an orange slice, and the other raven has decided it worthy of pursuit. Not a great shot, but then again, nearly a football field high in the sky. With the onset of winter, the ravens are moving into town in large numbers now. I fed a few dozen some table scraps on my shed roof today-- they were delighted-- 5 or 6 appearing out of nowhere when I approached the shed. I haven't fed them anything since last March or so and didn't see any around when I went outside, but they remembered, and in true raven style, were watching and ready for any opportunity. I'm really looking forward to late January when courtship season gets underway in earnest.
