Great American Cleanup, 4.28.12
Keep Oakland Beautiful's 2012 Great American Cleanup Event in East Oakland. We had 500 volunteers and 3 project areas: 1) Building 14 planter boxes, planting and beautifying the community garden at Verdese Carter Park; 2) Litter removal, weeding and mulching of over 33 blocks of the Bancroft Avenue median; and 3) Painting murals and planting a dozen ornamental and fruit trees at East Oakland PRIDE Elementary School. These projects were all within or adjacent to the 100 blocks most impacted by crime and violence in Oakland. It was a pleasure and an inspiration to work with such a large group of volunteers both local and from all over Oakland who came out to build community and beautify our city!
