Japan Alps National Park, Central Honshu, Japan

The classic view of Kamikochi Valley from Kappa-bashi (Kappa Bridge). We had a troupe of snow monkeys (Japanese macaques) pass through here, foraging for food and with a number of babies - they are very fluffy!

Please excuse the photos of the monkeys - my camera is not very good for wildlife photography and it's also not something I'm into either! At least it gives you the idea anyway :) These monkeys were actually very close but these images are taken on 40mm and cropped a little.

Amazing landscape. I have just seen a wildlife programme that featured these mountains and these monkeys! What a place.

Interesting to see the snow monkeys in their natural habitat rather than the usual (though very nice) shots of them in the hot springs. Beautiful landscape too!

      Thanks for the comments!

@Niall Corbet - funny you should say that! That's exactly what we decided - we had planned to go to the hot springs in Yudanaka to see the snow monkeys there but in the end decided it wasn't worth the effort (is expensive and takes quite a bit of time) to see them in what is essentially a park/zoo (they feed the monkeys to keep them there). Seeing them here in Kamikochi was a real highlight for us.

Beautiful photo series. I like the monkey in the one photo, natives of the area. Excellent framing, colors, composition + beautiful views ! Are the called Snow Monkeys ? Neat colors in water too. Thanks for sharing.

Kate, I thought at first this was New Zealand. You see images of wild nature in Japan so rarely - thanks for sharing these.

Fascinating details. I like mountain photography and it is interesting how varied mountains can be throughout the world.
