Colchester Causeway Looking North

Looking north from Colchester, VT to South Hero Island via the Causeway. The Causeway was built in 1901 using scrap marble from local quarries (yes, the causeway is made of marble). Trains ran on the causeway until 1961, and in 1970 the swing bridge was removed, so the causeway deadends about 2.5 miles out, with a ~60 foot gap. During some weekends in the summer, a local biking group (Local Motion) runs a ferry so that you can continue on the bike trail up South Hero Island.
