Street portrait: Luke, the Cowboy

Taken during a photographic workshop with Bill Allard entitled "In Partnership with the Land" I was at the Charlottesville City Market, the farmers' market where we began shooting for the weekend, when I saw this gentleman with a cowboy hat and an Earth Day T-shirt. I had been hearing from other workshop participants about "the Cowboy," but I hadn't seen him, and I hadn't expected him to be so young. I asked if he would be willing to let me make a portrait, and he agreed, and while I was making a couple of frames, some other people were snapping away, too. I ended up with shots where he was looking directly at me and ones in which he was looking away, and I liked this one the best. I guess there's something iconic about a cowboy looking off into the distance.
