Poppies in Peril... (You can help!)
UPDATE: I just learned that the area where I shot this is actually south of where the proposed racetrack would be located. Nonetheless, it still conveys why the reserve should be expanded to include every bit of this beautiful acreage in the western Antelope Valley.
This is a short video of an area east of the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve that currently is the site of a proposed motorsports park. Once developed, these fields of poppies will be gone. Unfortunately, the Reserve did not acquire this land along with the original acreage. At this point, the only thing holding up the racetrack is an application with the Los Angeles County Planning Commission for re-zoning.
If you would like to see the area protected, then I encourage you to write the commission or attend the hearing on June 9th to voice your dissent. I have posted contact info and further information here on the Wildflower Conservancy website.
My apologies for the poor quality video. I shot this with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 and I had no tripod handy. All of my photos, videos and text are copyright Kahlee Brighton, all rights reserved.
