Oqaatsut/Rodebay, Greenland

    Newer Older

Oqaatsut village, Greenland, photographed from the church/school. Oqaatsut is a village of hunters and fishers in Disko Bay, with about twice as many dogs as people. Notice the icebergs, which have wandered over from the Ilulissat icefjord, in the distance.

Fantastic! But, how do you live here?

Most of the people fish in the summer, from small boats, for Halibut in the bay. They use a traditional method, and catch lots! I don't know if you can see the frame to the left of the blue house on the right? They use those to dry Halibut and keep them throughout the year. Also they fish for a lot of shrimps, mainly for export to the rest of Greenland, and some to Europe. There's a small shrimp factory. During the winter, they use dogs and sleds to go hunting on the inland ice, for seal and hares, and the like. The dogs get the not-so-nice bits of fish.

There's no running water, and there's actually no fresh water at all. There's a small desalination plant in the centre of the village, which runs from diesel which is brought in by boat when the bay is ice-free. That goes to water tanks around the village. The icebergs are fresh-water, too, if any of that goes wrong. There's a nurse in the village who can hand out aspirin, etc, but you have to go by boat, or helicopter in emergencies, to the nearest town (20 miles) if there's anything serious.

I hope I've got most of that right!

      Dear kaet44,
Thank you so much for your response! It looked like life is tough in this town, and from what you described I wasn't mistaking. The north draws me like a magnet. I hope I am able to make it go Greenland one day.

I love your whole GL set. Thank you for sharing it with us!
