Heading Out Into The Lake
The tug, John Spence, powers out the McKeil Marine barge, Niagara Spirit, as it exits the Burlington Bay Canal into Lake Ontario. The operation is one to reduce the costs associated with trucking equipment to Newfoundland by loading 50+ trucks on board and then sailing across Lake Ontario, through the St Lawrence Seaway and on to their final destination in Newfoundland. If you are interested, there is an on-line article on the operation at www.thespec.com/print/article/536923 with more detail than would be suitable here. The shot was taken from the South arm of the two piers providing a protective entrance/exit from the Canal and looks, more-or-less, East. - JW
