Branch House 1

The Branch House, on Monument Avenue, was the meeting place for Marc Holmes' workshop. It is also the home of the Virginia Center for Architecture, and is currently hosting an Urban Sketching exhibit curated by Jessie Chapman.

For our first exercise in the workship, Marc had us do a quick sketch in pencil, outlining the big shapes, then refine using ink and spot darks. I really liked the spiral chimney - it reminded me a little of the Gaudi buildings we saw in Barcelona.

Strathmore, who sponsored the workshop, was kind enough to provide some nice sketchbooks for us to use - I did most of my sketches in one of their mixed media "Visual Journal" sketchbooks, which took a light wash well.
