Diana of Versailles

View On Black

The statue is also known as Diana à la Biche, Diane Chasseresse ("Diana Huntress"), Artemis of the Chase, and Artemis with the Hind. Originally installed in Versailles by Louis XIV, it was subsequently moved to the Louvre. I assume this sculpture in Versailles is a copy. Actually the original is a Roman copy of a Greek statue attributed to Leochares ca 325 BC found near Hadrian's Villa in Italy and given by Pope Paul IV to Henry II of France in the late 1550s. Restorations were then made by Barthélemy Prieur (1602) and Lange (1808). [I will be adding a photo of the Louvre statue when I get to that set and a photo of another copy in the Luxembourg Gardens. I wonder how many other copies I've missed.]
