Black Forest Cake

    Newer Older

My first fancy cake, ever - layers, whipped cream topping and all. I have no idea how people get the outer surfaces of cakes to be smooth; fortunately, this one's covered in bittersweet chocolate curls, so it doesn't really matter.

The black cherries on top are Luxardo maraschino cherries that I still had sitting around from trying to assemble a drinkable "Aviation" cocktail (and failing).

This is one of those cases where half-way through I think that this is really quite silly and hopefully will end soon so I can get back to programming - and then, boom, suddenly there's a cake.

Basic recipe from Food Network, with some moral support from Andrea's Recipes and basic Genoise technique from joepastry.com.

Is it true that there is a version of this cake whereby red or white wine is used in the making of the cake?
