The initial concept was to levitate my girlfriend as if I were a magician, but she doesn't like participating in these shots. Since that didn't work out, I used my daughter. There is actually a second part to this concept here. I could have been in the shot levitating her magically, but in the end, i decided against it. I wanted it to be simple and a bit believable.
So, I pulled off of heavy post editing to let it look like just a normal picture (except for the levitation).
Location: I chose the stairwell of my apartment complex for one good reason. The stairs give the sense of a real environment and not a studio. I liked the idea of floating around stairs. Besides, many of the shots I attempt in my white-walled apartment end up looking heavily faked.
So, here's what I settled on. Shot on my kit lens (instead of the primes) for my d7000. There is an sb600 firing to cam-right through a 16" softbox. Also, there were no shadows to fake, they were projected onto a wall not visible in the photo. The on-camera flash cast a shadow on the back wall that made it a little more believable. That was unexpected.
