Saint Mark’s Graduation 2010
The view from the podium. Congratulations to all of you! (larger size if you are in back)
Their excitement was palpable, and I’m not sure which of us had more butterflies in our stomach.
I was the commencement speaker this evening at my alma mater in Dallas. After thanking the teachers that made my life path possible, I said:
Not so long ago, I was sitting in those seats. I was a bit insecure and socially awkward – in short, a young budding geek. It took me a few years to embrace that identity, and I'll try to share some of that excitement tonight.
It is a great honor to be up here with you, and preparing for this talk was quite daunting. My first thought was to reflect on my commencement speaker, and frankly, I could not recall a single thing that he said. I think I was a bit distracted at the time, and hoped he would just get on with it. So, in case the same thing happens tonight, and you don’t remember a single word that I say, I hope to leave you with something. The view here from the podium is breathtaking. [whip out camera] So, smile. [click] Wait… someone blinked. [click] Perfect. I will post this on flickr tonight so you have something from this evening.
