Solar Rainbow greeting me as I awoke on my birthday
This spectacular sight greeted me for my birthday as I awoke this morning after a long sleep. The sunlight reflects off the inside of the distant spheres of watery mist, and then again off the PV panels, glancing beyond the critical angle of reflection. Each water-air boundary reflects only one polarization of light, yet there is enough surviving to present a delightful display for retina and sensitive light sensors… So cool.
I have tried to photograph unusual rainbows for some time, but have never seen something quite like this. As I child, when my Dad first explained how rainbows worked, I wondered if they should form a full "rain circle" if the Earth wasn't in the way. I finally saw that when up in a helicopter; see sequence below...
