Jamaican Caper pods... toasted edges curl, ruby jelly-covered seeds ripen!

I must have walked by this bush a thousand time, but today I was stopped in my tracks. What in the world are those strange red pods? And, as I moved about with my lens, the view got stranger and stranger.

I have thumbed through my plant tomes... in the time I've had since then... but so far I don't see anything that's anything like this. Whatever it's name is, its shape and color is stunning and most unusual!

And how clever of Mother Nature to seal these seeds in place like today's packers do... no slippage or breakage until the perfect moment for drop-off has arrived!
