Wercklea ferox... a rare Hibiscus beauty!

Deserving mention on any list of cultivated plants with prickly dispositions is Wercklea ferox, a close relative of the common hibiscus. A handsome species with multitudes of prickles on its large, red-veined leaves, ruddy stems and burgundy seed capsules, this Tropical American shrub bears yellow-and-red blossoms in the warm season.
