Mangrove Skipper with electric blue markings is busily working on Purple Mist flowers

This has been a marvelous winter thanks to these wondrous new friends! At first I couldn't get close to them before they flitted off to another flower. But now weeks later, we seem to have come to an understanding... you sit still and I'll just quietly take your picture and leave. And my dog will go with me!
The Mangrove Skipper is one of Florida's largest and most beautiful skippers. The female above is duller than its dark blue iridescent male companion. The female lays her eggs singly on red mangroves, and when the larvae hatch, they feed on the mangrove leaves.
