An Exhausting Climb to the Pass
An exhausted trekker is approaching the pass. Day two is the hardest on the Inca Trail. While it's not an especially physically demanding climb, the challenge results from the fact that the air is so thin and the climb is so steep. On the way up, I cursed the fact that I was wearing heavy, full-leather hiking boots. Afterall, every gram counts - literally! But it was a different story on the way down; we flew past the other trekkers in their sandshoes and synthetic boots.
