Provence rock formations & a wheat field

A geological wonder, "Les Penitents des Mées" is a row of columnar rocks (over 100 metres high, stretching 2 KM across) that dominate the green landscape near the village of Les Mées in Haute Provence, France. They're situated near the town of Les Mées in the Alpes de Haute Provence, France. (Interestingly, the Alpes de Haute Region department is one of Provence's largest and least populated.)


Les Mées are the result of erosion following an accumulation of debris coming from the nearby Alps. It's possible to walk (carefully) along the top of these formations, which consist of millions of tiny pebbles and stones. A wonder in an equally-wondrous part of France ...
