Battle of Harlem Heights
236 years ago today General Washington sent a scouting troop led by Captain Thomas Knowlton up this hill into Morningside Heights to see what the British were up to. The day before the Americans had been routed at Kip's Bay and a month earlier they had lost at Brooklyn Heights.
Knowlton's troops engaged the British but were vastly outnumbered. As Knowlton's troops retreated the British made a mistake: A "fox horn" was sounded on the bugle, indicating that the fox had given up and was ready to be killed by the hunters.
Insulted, the Continental Army regrouped in Hamilton Heights and advanced later in the day.
