Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was an Irish journalist that became a Japanese citizen during his time spent in Matsue where he took a Japanese wife and name (Koizumi Yakumo). He worked in Matsue as a teacher in 1890, but his greatest contribution was as a writer--detailing his time in Japan as well as re-telling local stories. A museum dedicated to Hearn is located near his old residence along the old Shiomi samurai street.
