Built by Horio Yoshiharu between 1607-1611, Matsue Castle is one of 12 original castles remaining in Japan. It saw no war or battle under the proprietorship of the Matsudaira during the 1600's because the unrest of the Sengoku Jidai and Sekigahara had ended. The "Black Castle," as it is called, is an impressive specimen. It is the second largest of the original castles and third tallest. It is also the only original castle in the Sanin region.
