Yasaka Shrine Torii

A medium-sized torii at Gion, Yasaka Shrine... On a really humid day in August of 2005. Yasaka Jinja is at the end of Shijo street and is home to the annual Gion Matsuri. However, it is so crowded during that time, that I dare not go near this place. Yasaka Shrine dates back to the 600's and is dedicated to the Shinto deity Susanoo (god of medicine). As the story goes, the Gion Festival started when thousands of people prayed to this deity in 869 to gain relief from an epidemic.

Yasaka Shrine. Gion District, Kyoto.
