Garyobai Plum in Kameido
A triptych by Ogata Gekko (1859-1920) entitled Garyobai Plum in Kameido (also referred to as Snow on Apricot Trees at Kameido) at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Kameido was the northeastern-most part of Edo, modern day Tokyo (Koto-ku). It is famous for it's Tenjin shrine which appears in several of Gekko's prints. This piece dates back to 1895 and is one of my personal favorite woodblock pieces because of it's size and simplicity. It is part of Gekko's collection, Flowers and Beauties at Famous Places.
Gekko is considered part of the ukiyo-e (woodblock) tradition, and is well-known for his bird and flower prints (kacho-e). This Edo period artist also did several prints featuring characters from The Tale of the Genji and the 47 ronin.
