Minamoto Kamon: Sasarindo 笹竜胆

On the gate leading directly in front of Yoritomo's grave is the Minamoto kamon (family crest), sasarindo.

On the grounds of the former Jibutsu-do (Hokke-do) lies the grave of one of Japan's most famous historical figures, Minamoto Yoritomo (1147-1199). Yoritomo established the first bakufu government here in Kamakura after the final defeat of the rival Taira clan in 1185. The original temple was replaced by Shirahata shrine in the Meiji era, but the tiered grave stone dates back to 1779.
