Hiroshima: A-Bomb Dome 原爆ドーム

A look at the destruction of the ground level of the genbaku domu located near ground zero of the 1945 attack.

The A-bomb dome (genbaku domu) is perhaps the most significant reminder of the destruction done on August 6, 1945 by the nuclear weapon known as "Little Boy." This building, one of the only remaining structures after the blast, has been preserved as a memorial. It is the major "attraction" of the Peace Memorial Park. I couldn't help but put my head down when I saw this. As an American, I have to admit that I felt ashamed by this, in some ways. War might be a necessary evil, but it doesn't mean we have to like it.
