    This was the old courthouse, erected by the corrupt "Boss Tweed" administration, and it is now a National Historic Landmark.

      i read somewhere that it cost as much to build as the palace of westminster, constructed at around the same time or a bit earlier, i thought it must be a joke.... nonetheless a fabulous looking building!

      It cost $178 million (today's dollars) to build this building, almost twice as much as the purchase of Alaska at the time. This courthouse became a symbol of corruption in New York. Just look up Boss Tweed.

      Isn't that crazy? I actually just read about it in Plunkitt of Tammany Hall.
