Valjean, rejected by society, at last finds a priest who lodges him and is very kind. Valjean, still harbouring evil thoughts towards humanity in general, steals this priest's silver, but the priest, who is in fact a bishop, frees him from the hands of the police which had recaptured him and lets him leave with his silver, telling him to be good and just from thence forth.
