Flange-bearing diamond

This unusual crossing diamond – termed a One Way Low Speed (OWLS) crossing – has been installed at the crossing of Union Pacific's Chicago-St. Louis line and the Toledo, Peoria & Western at Chenoa, IL. This UP line is being upgraded for high-speed passenger service.

This diamond design eliminates the flangeway gap for the high-speed route (Union Pacific) by providing a path for the slow-speed route (TP&W) that lifts the wheel flanges over the railhead of the high-speed route. The wheel flanges of the TP&W's train therefore bear the cars' weight during the passage of TP&W trains over UP's rails.

This view looks northwest.
