Escalator Into the Valley of Steel

    Newer Older

"Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel.
    What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes.
Now things are really what they seem.
No, this is not a bad dream."

It's astounding how much this place has gone to hell in 20 years time. In those 1989 photos floating around, the stairs on these escalators were still shiny, the walls and wallpaper were intact, and now... YIKES!

Agreed; the escalators, and the second floor area behind the camera's point of view are the only two areas I will not set foot on, because it's suicidal.

Here is the photo I was thinking of... In 1989 you could actually STAND on the escalator... and it even LOOKED like one!

I've noticed that there are more pictures from that roll of film on this Facebook page, and the original photographer says they were actually taken in 1986. Since the temporary school occupied the mall until 1981 (and they presumably maintained it until then; damage from the Blues Brothers notwithstanding), that means we're looking at only five years of vandalism and decay in those pictures.

Its most recent tenant, circa mid-90s, was Dixie Automotive Center. Presently, vacant and boarded up.
