EH14 Edinburgh Prison Officers Social Club
I waited across the street in jacket and scarf, on surely one of the coldest and wettest May evenings in history, the bus depot behind me, the prison across the road, and guessed that the square, grey, windowless building opposite was what Cai had picked for us. We shouldn’t really have been there, but just signed our names as guests and sat down in the members lounge. Talked mainly football; the Hearts Hibs cup final, the Champions League final, the new England manager, the English title race, all got a mention. As well as Aitzi’s team Athletic Bilbao, their heavy defeat in the Europa League final, and their Basque only signing policy. Ian googled kick-off for the Champions League, worried it might clash with the Eurovision Song Contest! I pointed out that a lot of teams go downhill straight after moving to a new stadium. We couldn’t escape the feeling of being in someone else’s territory, and moved to a games room for a few frames of snooker. But a dartboard in the corner was a stark reminder as we struggled to pot anything. It was a good laugh though, and at the end of the night we felt much more at home. As we got our jackets, I remembered I had lollipops in my pocket, I offered Ian one, and he immediately started sucking it!
