Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis)

A locally common breeding resident and passage migrant in Cyprus, Spanish sparrows often occur in large flocks regularly associating with House sparrows and Corn buntings.

These smart males, easily told from their relative, the house sparrow by their chestnut crown and dark streaking on the breast and flanks, were part of a large flock of at least 100 birds near Agios Georgios, north of Coral Bay.
