IMG_3556 Amanita pantherina

Eagle's Pride Golf Course, DuPont, Pierce County, Washington

I believe that this is the "Panther Cap" - Amanita pantherina. (I'm always happy to be schooled on fungus ID) There are a few similar mushrooms in the genus, however, so I'm not certain. I have not previously seen a white capped one apparently growing from the same mycelia.

The literature indicates that this 'shroom causes hallucinations and nausea, and can be fatal. That said, some crazy people ingest Amanitas to get high. Amanita pantherina contains the psychoactive compound muscimol, and has been used as an entheogen.

I want to live to enjoy the world, so won't eat anything in this genus.
