Studio stack: Leaf Rolling Weevil

Neocoenorrhinus aequatus

A 3-4mm long leaf rolling weevil. These tiny beetles use their specialized mouthparts to make precision incisions to leafs in such a way that they roll up and create a protected environment for the larvae of the beetle (see below for more info!)

This is a dead/prepared specimen shot at 8:1 and stacked from 121 exposures in Zerene Stacker.

Lens: JML 21mm f3.5

Lighting: One Canon Speedlight 270EX on gorillapod from above right, diffused through a white plastic yoghurt bottle. One flexible LED from either side (Ikea: "Jansjö"). Each exposure 0.5s, flash fired on 2nd curtain.
