Neat shot - the markings, still featuring the "meatball" in the star of the national insignia, date the image to the first half of 1942. The red center was officially deleted in May 1942 (along with the red & white stripes on the rudders); they disappeared almost overnight in the Pacific theater. It's possible they might have taken an extra month or so to be completely removed/overpainted at Stateside bases...
