Berengrave Nature Reserve (2)

Rainham Docks East is part of Riverside Country Park, Gillingham, Kent and part of Berengrave Nature Reserve.This is to the north of The Lower Rainham Road

 

Evidence exists that there was Stone Age activity in this area.

Roman cement Kilns were sited here and part of this area was once a Roman Burial ground.

 

Between 1912 and 1931 there was a cement works here.

 

Chalk was extracted from Rainham Chalk Pit

 

Barges were sailed into the river at high tide.As the tide fell the barges were grounded on the mud.

"Muddies" then collected the mud from the river bed and loaded it into the barge.As the tide came in the barges re-floated and were sailed into Rianham Dock.Here the mud was off loaded mixed with chalk and fired at high temperatures to produce Chalk
