Volleyball GoPro setup - ghetto safety cable
This was my second time ever mounting a remote camera over people. This GoPro Hero2 setup captured video as my volleyball-league team played a couple games on the gym floor about 20 feet below, while I sat out with a minor injury.
This was the first time using the Matthews super clamp, and first time putting the Manfrotto arms over people. Also the chance that the camera and/or arm would be randomly hit by a volleyball was about 3%.
So I used 24" wire fishing leaders (45 lbs test) chained together to serve as a McGyver'ed safety cable. But the attachment point for the leaders to the camera housing was made by putting a 12" leader loop right under the latch, which wasn't too smart, since that wouldn't be very strong.
Fortunately no ball impacted the setup during 30 min of play.
A sports shooter I know with much more experience with remote camera setups recommended not using the Manfrotto arm at all, but rather going for a simpler setup - just attaching the GoPro housing to a stud attached to the Matthews super clamp.
