rainbo club

The Rainbo Club, on Damen just south of Division, was a former hangout of Nelson Algren and is the setting for large portions of his writing. The 'real Chicago' likeable losers of The Man with the Golden Arm have given way to dismissive art-school hipsters and, increasingly, the North Side yuppies who are taking over Wicker Park, but it would seem that little else has changed in the nearly 70 years the bar has been open: the burlesque stage remains, as does the dim, neighborhoody, slightly seedy ambience. Prices here are hard to beat-- local brews on tap for $3. The black-and-white photobooth here is the photobooth for all the Friendster profile photos you'll see if you calibrate your search criteria the right way.
