Beijing: Mandarin Oriental & CCTV Tower

Beijing Landmark #3: Now, I'm breatheless again. Picture here is an overview of the whole complex of CCTV, consisting of the CCTV Tower HQ and future Mandarin Oriental hotel, which upon completion in 2009 will become Beijing's most exclusive and luxurious hotel. The shape of both buildings are nothing ordinary. Extraordinary could not even describe the full extent of its complexity and sophistication.

These are throphy buildings that could only be conceived and realized only if there are excessive budget; visionary developer; visionary architect and extraordinary contractors and foremans to oversee the construction. These are buildings the world has never seen before. A spectacular skyscraper with two towers that ascend on angle and meet each other on the top level and then futher joined by a giant horizontal platform that cantilevers all the way to create an illusion that there is no support. Such spectacular design could only be proposed by the legendary Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas, who is one of the most prominent and important living architects of our time.

Too bad the whole complex are not ready for the 2008 Olympic. I had initially planned to stay at the Mandarin Oriental hotel and see how spectacular the design will be. For now, I'm more than satisfy to have just looked at it from this distant. Another human achievement worth showing off. I'll post a picture looking from the other direction soon.
