russian embroidery and lace, plate 48

    Newer Older

Kokoshnik (headdress) of an unmarried woman, pearls, gold thread and mother-of-pearl plaques on silk and foil. Early 19th c, Vologda province.

I adore this kokoshnik and have wanted to copy it since I first saw it. I have enough tiny, perfect freshwater pearls set aside for it.

Caroline, nope, it's just because I'm a dork. This is a book I used to refer to a lot back when I was doing Russian costuming, and I picked it up again because I'm thinking about designing a sleeve tattoo based on the embroidered shirt sleeves (thus all of the cross-stitch detail photos). Then when I saw these hats I was reminded of how badly I used to (and still do) want one.

Oh? I may be able to out dork you, I just bought a book on Albrecht Durer from a used bookstore in Tokyo for an insanely ludicrous amount of money just because I love his etchings and for no other reason. A sleeve? Did I tell you my plan is to get one when I am in my 70's? That's how long it would take for me to figure out what I would want....

My plan is for all of my ink to be well worn in by the time I'm 70, and for all of the purple and blue old-lady lines to blend in beautifully with the ink lines so my whole shrivelled old body is a blast of pattern and colour.

Caroline, it's the middle of the night where you are, don't you ever sleep?

    6. caroline_mortimer 93 months ago | reply

I nap periodically throughout the day actually. Oh I'm not in tokyo now, I'm home watching a movie and goofing off online. I'm taking a little financial/spiritual break from tokyo at the moment.
Do you have any sketches for your sleeve? I would love to see them!

    7. jodigreen 93 months ago | reply

No sketches yet, just ideas forming. All sketches will go up here for approval, fear not. I'm in no hurry, the sugar daddy who's going to finance my transition from tattooed person to heavily tattooed person hasn't shown up yet anyway.
